New York to install 100 EV fast-charging stations

One hundred fast-charging stations for electric vehicles will be installed by New York City next year, marking the first time the technology will be available for the authority’s vehicles.

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services said the new stations will be used to charge city government vehicles. It plans to spend $10 million from its proposed capital budget to install the chargers, which will be located at managed fuelling locations.

‘New York City government has the cleanest and greenest vehicle fleet in the country and we’re building upon our success by installing 100 new electric vehicle chargers that will significantly decrease charging times,’ said Lisette Camilo, commissioner of the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services.

‘In as little as 15 minutes, we’ll be able to charge environmentally-friendly electric vehicles and get them back on the streets serving the people of New York City.’

New York City currently has 500 electric-vehicle charging stations but none of them are fast-chargers.

The city will also install 50 solar carports or canopies with solar panels that electric vehicles can park under to charge.

New York City has already installed more than 12,000 new safety features on city vehicles as part of its Vision Zero Safe Fleet Transition plan. These include automatic emergency braking, rear-view cameras and side guards to help prevent pedestrians and cyclists from falling under larger vehicles.
