A fleet of 18 new Toro mowers have been delivered to East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) by local dealer the Russell Group.

The fleet includes 12 LT3340 heavy-duty triple cylinder mowers and six Toro Groundsmaster 3400 high-performance rotary mowers and will be joined by a further 12 machines, making 30 in total.

The decision on which types of mowers to purchase was made after staff rigorously tested several different machines.

Andy Height, service manager for waste, streets and grounds for ERYC, said it was important to get the most efficient and effective mowers because the council has one of the largest areas of land tended to by any council in the UK.

'Every two weeks, the grounds team cuts the equivalent of 919 professional football pitches - that's 6.9 million square metres of grass,' he said.

'We have 124 grounds staff, with 54 of those being seasonal here at the Council, and it was very important to have some of them involved in the decision-making as they're the ones using them every day.'

Along with high quality and positive staff feedback, Height said the financial savings were equally important in the decision-making process.

'Since using Toro, the information we've received from the fleet shows average fuel savings of 12-15%, which is fantastic.'
